On this day May 7 1975 the Timbers won there first match ever 1-0 over Toronto here in Portland. Peter Withe scored on a header in the 33 minute mark in front of 8,500 fans. Withe was on loan from Birmingham City and would score 15 more goals for the Timbers. Peter Withe was a rising star when he played for Portland. He was amazing in the air scoring his headers and would never back down with his physical style. of play.
Withe never returned to the Timbers or the NASL but continued playing in England. The reason some players were not loaned back to the Timbers is Vic Crowe had told the teams that their players they had loaned would be back for the beginning of their season in England. That did not happen so teams would not loan their good players to the Timbers in the future. Vic Crowe and GM Don Paul paid a fine to the NASL for their actions on the player loans after the 1975 season. The next season the Timbers won 8 and lost 16.
After the season Withe returned to England and played in 35 matches for Birmingham City and score 9 times. Withe played only one season with Birmingham City and went to Notingham Forest which won the First Division. Peter score 28 goals in 75 matches before moving on to Newcastle United in 1978. When Withe was at New Castle he played in 76 matches and had 25 goals. 1980 Withe was transferred to Aston Villa where he had his best seasons as Villa won the League and the European Cup in 1982 with Withe scoring the winning goal in the final. Withe had nine caps for England and was on the 1982 England World Cup roster.
